Acting Appointment
Acting Appointment is the temporary placement of an officer to perform the duties of a higher office or another office for a defined period, without changing the officer's substantive appointment.
How it works
An acting appointment normally follows a formal decision by the proper appointing authority, identifies the office being acted in, and defines the effective date and conditions. The officer continues to hold the substantive post unless and until a separate permanent or temporary appointment is made.
Why it matters
Acting appointments affect salary administration, acting allowance eligibility, seniority questions, and the accuracy of service records. They should never be treated as an informal substitution or a permanent promotion by implication.
